HAKUBAVALLEY

The Best Eight Views of Hakuba Valley

Comprising Ōmachi City, Hakuba Village and Otari Village, the Hakuba Valley area is a treasure trove of spectacular views that will stir your soul, so we decided to select the Best Eight Views of Hakuba Valley.
First, members of HAKUBAVALLEY TOURISM and other experts suggested locations, and then residents and fans of the area shared their thoughts in a questionnaire.
We created three lists: The Best Eight Views of Feng Shui, The Best Eight Views of the Salt Road and The Best Eight Views of the Mountains and Waters, for a total of 24 spots.

How the Best Eight Views of Hakuba Valley were selected

The Best Eight Views of Hakuba Valley was inspired by the Eight Views of Xiaoxiang in China. These are a collection of eight particularly picturesque spots around Lake Dongting. Details such as the season, time of day, and weather conditions in which they are at their most beautiful are also noted, and pictures of these spots include buildings, bridges and people to capture a variety of elements of the landscapes in one picture.
Japan followed suit with a number of similar lists, such as the Eight Views of Ōmi, near Lake Biwa.

The concept of the Eight Views is often misunderstood. It is not the same as the purely nature-oriented approach we see today in initiatives like national parks. It follows in the footsteps of idealistic landscape paintings drawn by famous painters, a tradition that has long existed in the East. We have followed that tradition with these Eight Views with the aim of bringing Hakuba closer to the idealistic views in those paintings.
